What is workplace education?

The Department of Education, in partnership with business, industry, and labour organizations, administers a program called Workplace Education that promotes and delivers learning at work. Workplace Education supports the development of a skilled and adaptable workforce.

Workplace Education programs help employees build the basic skills they need to develop and grow in their jobs.

Essential workplace skills include:

  • Reading
  • Communication
  • Writing for work
  • Basic computer use
  • Math
  • Essential skills for supervisors
  • Using workplace documents
  • Problem solving
  • Working with others

This initiative can help you manage the changes in your workplace. A Workplace Education program will help your employees enhance skills that support their success on the job, at home and in the community. Each program is developed to respond to the specific needs of your workplace and your employees so that employees are able to apply their new skills right away. Classes usually take place on-site, fully or partially on work time.
